Academic Affiliations


University of Pittsburgh

The Medical Virtual Reality Center (MVRC) is based in the Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) in the School of Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh. Nationally, the Department of Otolaryngology ranks third in the amount of research funding it receives from the National Institutes of Health. The University of Pittsburgh is Pennsylvania's second largest university with an approximate enrollment of 26,700 students.

Members of the MVRC hold faculty positions in the following departments within the School of Medicine: Otolaryngology, Neurology, and Psychiatry. The MVRC is also closely affiliated with several other schools in the university. The faculty have appointments in the departments of Bioengineering and Electrical Engineering within the School of Engineering. Faculty from the MVRC also are based in the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). The Department of Library and Information Science provides invaluable technical expertise and infrastructure support.

The MVRC is closely affiliated with Dr. Redfern's Human Movement and Balance Lab (HMBL) at the University of Pittsburgh. The HMBL investigates several research areas such as postural control and the biomechanics of slips and falls.

Clinical Affiliations


Eye and Ear Institute
The close relationship between the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) provides the ideal setting for conducting the clinically-oriented research that is the primary goal of the MVRC. The clinical practices of the physicians in the Department of Otolaryngology are an important resource of the MVRC. In addition, Centers for Rehab Services, a partner of the UPMC, provides physical therapy services for persons with dizziness and balance disorders.
